A lunar eclipse is an astronomical event that comes into being when the Moon comes in its shadow just behind the Earth. This can only happen when the Sun, Earth and Moon align in a straight line. The lunar eclipse occurs only on the Full Moon day. The duration of a lunar eclipse is always longer than that of a solar eclipse. Besides the scientific importance of the lunar eclipse, it also has religious and astrological significance. According to Vedic astrology, an eclipse is considered to be a period of negative effects for all the species residing on earth. Anyone during this astronomical event is barred from initiating any auspicious activity during this period and are also advised to implement certain remedies to ward off the negative effects.

There are three types of Lunar Eclipses. Let us get to know about them in detail!
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse/Upachaya Grahan: According to astrology, the penumbral lunar eclipse takes place when the Sun, Earth and Moon are not able to come in a straight line and the Earth stops some part of the sunlight from reaching the lunar surface. Because of this, the shadow of the outer part of the Earth, commonly called the Upchaya or the penumbra, falls on the moon. In such a scenario, the surface of the Moon becomes foggy and the colour may be slightly muddy, which is what comes into being in the form of a (penumbral) lunar eclipse.
Full Lunar Eclipse: In the case of a full lunar eclipse, the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon and the Earth completely covers the Moon behind it. In such a situation, the Moon appears to be emerging as completely red or pink. According to astrology, this most effective eclipse is also called full lunar eclipse and the scientific name given to it is the Super Blood Moon.
Partial Lunar Eclipse: if we talk about what happens during a partial lunar eclipse when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon, but the Moon is not able to hide behind the Earth completely and due to this, the Earth's shadow is placed on some parts of the Moon. According to astrology, this eclipse is called the partial lunar eclipse and it does not last for a very long time.

When it comes to the domain of Hinduism, each and every event or festival has some mythological importance associated with it. It is mentioned in the scriptures that solar and lunar eclipses are related to the shadow planets, Rahu and Ketu. According to a popular legend, there was a monster named Swarbhanu. Swarabhanu cheated after the Ksheer Sagar churning and took a few drops of nectar from Lord Krishna in the form of Mohini in the queue of the gods. Surya Dev and Chandra Dev revealed his identity to Vishnu. After knowing the distinction, Lord Vishnu separated Swarbhanu's head from his torso with his Sudarshan Chakra. Although Asura Swarbhanu drank a few drops of nectar, so his head and torso became immortal forever, from that time his head was called "Rahu", then his torso started to be called "Ketu". Due to this same enmity, Rahu and Ketu come every year to put an eclipse on the Sun and Moon.
